Sled Dog Challenge

Sled Dog Challenge

11 Aug 2012 - 12 Aug 2012

Located high up in the Victorian snowfields and bounded by the picturesque Alpine village of Dinner Plain, arrival of the seasons first snow is signal to the Altitude 5000 Sled Dog Group to step up preparation for their spectacular SLED DOG CHALLENGE!

Celebrating 19 years of successful sled dog racing at Dinner Plain….the 2012 race is to be held across the weekend of the 11th & 12th August.

This annual event showcases the top dogs of sled dog racing in Australia and is unique in being the first Australian snow-based race of its kind. More than 75 Mushers (dog team drivers) and in excess of 350 sled dogs are expected to compete at this year’s event. The race is held over two days with times recorded on both days. Teams who successfully complete the course both days with combined fastest times are the winners.

This year, spectators will see standard 2, 3, 4 and 6 dog teams supplemented by an exhilarating new 8 dog team class. If you are planning to attend this popular weekend you are in for a unique experience. Expect to see and hear plenty of enthusiastic howling and excited sleddog teams. Witness the awesome speed and pulling power of the new 8 dog team class whilst jostling with spectators and media for the best photographic vantage points.

Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are the most common breeds of dogs raced. Both breeds are visually and physically powerful competitors given snow is a part of their natural habitat. Siberian Huskies are extremely quick on their paws, while the Alaskan Malamutes are known for their endurance over long distances. In recent years, more unusual breeds have also competed including Labradors, Hounds and Shepamutes (a cross between German Shepherds and Malamutes).

Fans are welcome to meander through the “Sled Dog Park” (race pits) – where all dog teams are housed, get up close with dog sleds and equipment, speak with Mushers and with owners permission pat or have their photo taken with their favourite dog team.

Other planned activities include freight sled pulling demonstrations, snow ball throwing and a snowman building competition for the kids. BBQ, hot chocolate and coffee stands, pumped competitors, presentation and celebration. All of this makes for a unique, colourful and exciting winter carnival.

Race Start times:        Saturday 9.00am to 1.00pm - followed by lunch
Sunday 9.00am to 12.30pm - followed by awards

Dinner Plain is the only Australian Alpine Village where sled dogs are allowed to race and then it is only for this weekend under strict permit conditions. Spectators are most welcome, but it is stressed that dogs not competing be left at home.
