Activities

Dinner Plain has so much on offer, mother nature has created a playground for sporting and nature enthusiasts.  Explore the Alpine National Park, walk, ride, ski or snowboard.  Fish the mountain streams or admire the breath taking scenery as you drive, cycle or ride the touring loops; the Great Alpine Road or the Bogong Alpine Way.

Choose from the following activities to make the most of your stay.

Walking

There are a wide variety of walks in Dinner Plain, the Alpine National Park and Mt Hotham Resort. The bush walking and mountain bike season lasts from early November until late April. The area is usually snow covered or too wet during winter and early spring.

During the snow season, trails are groomed from June until September and are suitable for cross country skiing and snow shoeing. In good weather a fit person can cover 3 kilometres an hour. Remember to make allowances for long steep climbs, photography and rests. Carry plenty of drinking water.

Dinner Plain's Top Five Walks;

Room with a View
3km return (easy to moderate)
A short walk from Dinner Plain this is the first completed project by the Dinner Plain Landcare group. The walk was originally an old horse riding track taking you on an easy walk through the snowgum forest to an open plain with spectacular views of Mount Hotham, Mount Feathertop, Bogong High Plains and the Cobungra River.

Charmichael Falls
2km return - (moderate)
Heading off from the Dinner Plain 4WDTrack this clearly marked track takes a path to a lookout with seating so you can sit back and overlook this picturesque falls amongst the snowgums

Dead Timber Hill
(easy to moderate)
A very new walk to the area, but absolutely breath taking, walk through the fire stricken area that is slowly breathing life again to a romantic look out destination of Hotham and an exquisite sunset location.

Precipice Plain
18km returns (moderate)
Walk or bike along the Dinner Plain 4WD Track to a lovely natural lookout across the remote Dargo Valley. Catch the sunset in the high country for fabulous colours in the sky, breath in the cool air and lovely cool summer breeze.

Table Top
20km return (difficult)
Mt Tabletop is a distinctive flat plateau linked to the Great Diving Range by a low ridge. From JB plain, follow the old fence line south across the Plains for 0.5km from Here the route is marked by orange triangular markers. After crossing the snow plains and snow gum woodland the route drops down to tabletop Creek then follows a long ridge up the plateau. The track is marked to a rocky outcrop just below the summit. Return by the same route.

Cycling

The highest bitumen road in Australia is a great place for incredibly scenic road cycling sessions in summer, particularly for those competitive riders wishing to engage in altitude training.

A simple ride between Dinner Plain and Hotham is a great way to escape the everyday in amongst the high country snowgums. Why not challenge yourself with a journey to Omeo or Harrietville (yes it is steep but fortunately most of it is downhill!).

Regional Cycling Events

A number of cycling events take place in the region over the spring and summer months.

Conquer the seven climbs (or even one!) in the Alpine Ascent Challenge and be in the running for great prizes. Ride the Bogong Alpine Loop passing through Mt Beauty, Falls Creek and Omeo before finishing off with a well deserved soak in the Onsen at Dinner Plain.

Join Robbie Crowe for a weekend of expert tuition at the Hotham Challenge Ride and DP Festival of Cycling.

Mountain Biking

Soak up the cool crisp Alpine air, whilst riding on one of the wide range of mountain biking options Dinner Plain has on offer with undulating ridgeline rides with amazing views and coasting downhill runs through snowgum forests, creek crossings, jumps and bush tracks.

Numerous fire trails and 4WD tracks wind through the bush, so there’s lots to explore. Mountain bikes and helmets are available for hire at Adventures with Altitude in Dinner Plain.
